The scratching surface is corrugated cardboard. Cats that prefer a horizontal scratch — the full forepaw extension — find corrugated paper more satisfying than sisal rope, which is typically configured vertically. Many cats also rest on corrugated surfaces once they've been thoroughly claimed, which the included catnip accelerates considerably. A small application on the surface on the first day and most cats have established it as theirs within hours.
